The elder George holds his fellow Yalies-particularly his Bones brethren-in great esteem, and over the years has often gone to them for advice. To our amazement it worked, resurrected from the dead by the power of Slomo. Even without our tandem ride, we did not feel cheated in the least, we had gotten so much more than we could have ever expected from this mercurial character.Īfter another 15 minutes on life, love, philosophy and spirituality, and just before we went our separate ways, I tried the board one last time. He circled back and noted the problem with an understanding chuckle. After 45 minutes of sermon we had reached a spiritual riding crescendo the moment was here and there was Slomo gliding on down the boardwalk without us. At that moment I rushed to turn on the board, hurriedly stepped onto it and…. “We worship the same god, this is a type of worship, and what this machine is, is one more way to get you into this type of worship.”įinally Slomo turned on his music, a Wagner sounding composition which he made himself, froze instantly in a heroic pose, eyes staring into the future, and took off, very, very, slowly. The problem is that the euphoric experience ends with the inevitable deceleration.Īccordingly, Slomo has created his skating technique around perpetual motion. It’s the reason we jump out of airplanes, become ski bums, or wait in absurdly long lines to get on roller coasters. Slomo explained that there is something about the feeling of acceleration that people love, so much in fact that it has the power to change them (check out the documentary for the scientific explanation). When I say its an art I mean its done inside yourself (pointing to his head), a sport is done out here (pointing towards the street)” “This is all an art,” Slomo explained of his roller blading, in a slow pensive southern drawl, “it’s not a sport. He began expressing his desire to go for a ride and then launched into a 45 minute introduction to his gliding philosophy. Amidst the crowded boardwalk he barely saw the board rolling up, we got off as he examined it with considerable interest, enthusiasm, and admiration. Honestly, we were star struck and needed a moment to collect ourselves as he came into view, clad in his classic blue tank top, fishing cap, and of course, skates. We met Slomo on the Pacific Beach boardwalk after a long morning shooting video footage at dawn. It turns out he is also a big Onewheel fan, and after an impressive demo session at our shop, he connected us with the man, the myth, the legend, Slomo. ![]() We were blown away after watching the documentary and shot an email over to Josh expressing our kudos. John, who is now known only as Slomo, has spent every day of the last 16 years perfecting his unusual signature skating style and has grown into a folk hero and local legend. With his background as a neurologist, he can clinically assess that he might be crazy – but to see and hear him describe the motivations behind his chosen path, this man couldn’t be more sane.A couple months back we stumbled upon an award-winning documentary produced by Josh Izenburg titled Slomo. An updated version of the game titled Darq: Complete Edition, which collects the base game and all downloadable content, was released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on December 4, 2020, and ported for multiple console platforms in March 2021. The game was initially released for Microsoft Windows on August 15, 2019. Marketed as a psychological horror game, Darq follows a boy named Lloyd, who is trapped in a lucid dream state, as he manipulates the physics system which governs his dream world in order to solve puzzles and evade enemies. The game successfully instils fear and sadness through its incredible art style and well-crafted levels to leave you feeling a little shaken up as the adventure ends and the final credits roll.Darq (stylized as DARQ) is a puzzle- platform adventure game developed by independent studio Unfold Games. Fantastic for those of you who hate cheap jump scares. The despondent tone follows you through the levels as you feel for the character as he shows visible fear from the predicament he finds himself in, even if it is not entirely clear to you.ĭespite being based on the roots of a horror experience, the game is not scary in a traditional sense. The lack of structure to the adventure conveys a level of hopelessness. The absence of a traditional story isn’t a complete misfortune, however. Although the game is quite enjoyable without it, the experience could have been a little longer with the help of a story to guide it along. The game has very little in terms of a story and this is a shame. The enemies in DARQ are borderline comical but in the unsettling environments present them in a far more uncomfortable way that will help fuel the feelings of darkness that the world is already giving off in abundance. These levels present some new challenges to help you spend a little more time in this peculiarly dark world. The complete edition comes with two additional levels. The game is rather short, consisting of only 7 levels which you could beat in a few hours. The thrill you get is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the game. The levels of suspense can go through the roof at times when you are rushing to solve a puzzle as a dark shadow in a wheelchair slowly creeks down a shadowy hallway toward you. The levels are rather small but when you consider your unique ability to change the perspective of the camera, you end up with incredibly compact levels that offer an enjoyable level of challenge that will really make you think when you get stuck.Įach of the levels will bring you to a new location, just as sombre and unhappy as the last. Gravity will also be altered, making for some interesting puzzle designs that are a lot of fun to try and work out. The trippy experience of walking up a wall is more than just a spiderman style change. Although the camera always remains to the side, your character possesses a unique ability to rotate the camera that will allow you to walk up walls and even unlock areas of the background and foreground that would normally be inaccessible for this genre. DARQ throws you into the fun pretty quickly but doesn’t let that be a sign that the game is easy.ĭARQ presents you with a 2.5d side scroller that puts a rather unique perspective on the genre. There is no extended tutorial, endless dialogue or boring intro puzzles that hold your hand as you get used to the controls. The most attractive element of the game outside of the visuals is how easy it is to just pick up and play. An underlying fear that even in what appears to be your safe space, you are only a moment away from something taking a turn for the worst. Your characters face will reflect the gloomy and dark surroundings evoking similar feelings as you take control of the character. DARQ is one of the latest games to take a page out of this style to produce a rather eerie and compelling puzzle experience that will catch your eye the moment you set your eyes on it.Īs soon as you get started with this game, the deep atmosphere will completely absorb you. Horror games that reflect the Tim Burton style of Expressionism are always a treat to play when done right. ![]() ![]() You can place a mountain here, a river next to it, a village down further and some spider-monster nests near a road. Memories are cards, of course, and there are strict rules to follow. The hero walks, in a circle, looping again and again, and you help them remember by placing memories to form a place. You don’t control the hero’s movement, you don’t control the way they fight. Here lies the core concept: Loop Hero doesn’t give you control. If you watch a trailer or a gameplay video, you’ll see that the little ghostly knight walks in a circle, with empty nothingness all around them. Yes, the gameplay is also built on the black, empty void. This premise is expertly designed and creates the canvas on which the game builds its story, lore and gameplay. So, it falls upon you, the hero, the one who can actually remember the previous state of the world, to reconstruct it. Nobody can even remember how it used to be, everyone has forgotten. There is no color, mountains don’t exist, rivers, forests, land and sea are all absent the world is now a black void. In Loop Hero’s world, everything has disappeared. Moreover, the story does a great job making the roguelite elements feel plausible. The dialogues are the star of the show, charming, funny, interesting fun but also somber. This is a genuinely well-written plot, engaging, full of character and personality. Loop Hero is, after all, very strange.įirst things first: yes, this weird mix has an actual story and surprisingly it isn’t just filler material. If it sounds like trouble, well, better stay away. If rogue-card-RPG sounds even a little enticing, chances are this will be one of your favorite recently released games. The only entry point is that you must be tempted by this description. It’s a part rogulite, a bit RPG, it utilizes loot, turn-based combat and even cards, it has a story and can eliminate your free time -and you’ll love it. It’s a weird experiment, a strange mix of genres and mechanics, a combination that sounds too niche to be fun, or even to exist. You see, this little game punches far aboive than you’d except and works far better than it should be allowed to. Well, dungeon crawler and roguelite are terms that are needed to describe Loop Hero, but they are by no means enough. Another dungeon crawler, another roguelite, by the looks of it. Indeed, its graphics are pixelated and too simple you are a small hero that looks like… something, a skeleton maybe, build on basic animations and zero details. Take a look at this game, Loop Hero, and you’ll probably dismiss it as “another one of those retro-loving indies”. |
